Carys Munday

Carys Munday is training to become an electrician.

Trades World spoke to Carys to find out more about her life, changes, and future ambitions in the trades.

What did motivate you to pursue a career in the electrical trades?

I am looking to change careers; I have always been hands on person and enjoy practical work. I chose electrics because I found it more interesting than plumbing.

What is your employment history?

I am a croupier and I current work in a casino.

How are you finding the transition from your current career into the trades?

Actually, I am really enjoying it and I find it very interesting.

What qualities does someone need to have in order to be a good electrician?

I think trades professionals need to have excellent customer service skills; good housekeeping skills are also required as they need to be neat and tidy when working in peoples’ homes. I think it is important for people in the trades to be aware of the surroundings around them.

Are you finding your customer-related experiences relevant and useful in the trades?

I am not actually working at the moment but when I get a job I think that my customer service experience will definitely help me in the electrical profession. Obviously, through my current job I meet many people from all backgrounds and nationalities, so that will help me provide excellent customer service in my electrical profession.

What things have you been doing on the course?

We have gone through the theoretical part of the course in order to prepare for both the theoretical and the practical exams. We have done installation of different electrical systems, wiring, testing, inspecting as well as many other essential skills that will be required in the electrical trades.  I particularly enjoy the practical training in centre.

What is your plan after you finish your course and become fully qualified electrician?

My very end goal would be to run my own business, but I am planning to look for employment with someone else in order to gain more experience and knowledge.

What advice would you give to those considering a career in the trades?

I would say to people to work hard and enjoy themselves.
