Nathan Bloom
Nathan Bloom is training to become an electrician.
Trades World spoke to Nathan to find out more about his life, changes, and future ambitions in the trades.
What did motivate you to pursue a career in the electrical trades?
I had some difficulties with my family a few years ago and I ended up jobless with nowhere to go…the trade was the best option that offered me a lot of independence…I was able to be my own boss and work myself, rather than for someone else. That sense freedom gave me a lot of self-motivation and I am happy with my current career in the electrical trade.
How long have you been training now?
I have been training for two years, but at the same time I am self-employed tradesman, so it is essential for me to get fully qualified in the electrical business.
What qualities does someone need to have in order to be a good electrician?
You have to be very self-motivated. It is important to work hard and be extremely dedicated in order to become the successful tradesman that you want to be.
Do you find some of the skills from your profession useful and relevant in the training?
Absolutely, through the guidance of many people I have worked in the trades…I have learnt so many useful things. There are always real-world factors that need to be considered, so not everything can be taught in a classroom environment, but when you get on a building site you gain that essential experience that will help you in your future career. People need to have both, the knowledge of the course and the experience of the real-case scenarios to have the wisdom of the trades.
What things have you been doing in the course?
It is my fourth week of practical training and we have covered most of the things that will be needed in my electrical career. Technology changes in the trades, so it is good to be up to date with everything new on the market.
What is your favourite part of the course?
The practical training is my favourite part that I most enjoy.
What do you think about the tutors in centre?
Tutors are great! Every centre I have been…the tutors are really helpful and they always try to give you an understanding of something that you are concerned about. People have different ways of learning and tutors try to adapt and be as helpful as possible.
What is your plan after you finish your course and become fully qualified electrician?
My big plan is to start my own business…I have already started my own web site and designed business cards etc. etc…it is work in progress and I hope to get things moving fairly soon.
What advice would you give to those considering a career in the trades?
There are so many things that you can say “do or don’t do”, but I suppose that as long as people believe in themselves, they can do it. There is always a solution to any problem in the trades.
