Darren Russell

Darren Russell is training to become a plumber.

Trades World spoke to Darren to find out more about his life, changes, and future ambitions in the trades.

What did motivate you to pursue a career in the trades?

Plumbing is a trade that is respected within the industry, it is a profession that is always on demand and has a huge potential in the future.

What did interest you into the plumbing industry?

I worked in the motor trade for 30 years, selling cars and different car parts as well. After the company went into administration, I retired and put my feet up for couple of years and then I decided to retrain and pursue a plumbing career.

Do you find some of the skills from the motor trade industry useful in your plumbing career?

A lot of my work in the motor trades was very practical work, so I definitely found it useful to know how to do things logically and work them out in my head before I actually start the job. Yes, I think those skills are very helpful indeed.

What qualities does someone need to have in order to be a good plumber?

I think a lot of it is about patience…and being able to look at everything and be very objective of what you are going to do. You have to approach the job full-heartedly, with an open mind, not rushing things through, but making sure that the job is done properly.

Have you done any plumbing work before?

I have done some plumbing work on my own house and one another property I am renovating at the moment.

Was that something what triggered you to enter the trades in the first place?

The course was very useful as I didn’t have to hire any people for the plumbing work…and because I can practice on my own property, I am only liable to myself. So, the pressure is not there, you can take your time and make sure everything is all right. I am a perfectionist and I tend to spend a little bit longer than I should do.

What are the things you have been doing in centre?

This week I have installed a new sink and a toilet. I have also done a conversion tank with a header tank, so it’s a case of fitting different pipes and doing lots of bends, a bit of soldering and other essential things for the plumbing industry.

What is the most enjoyable part of the course for you?

The fact that I am a practical person and enjoy doing hands-on things is really helping me. When you see your progress and look at the things you have achieved…I think that is definitely the most enjoyable part of the course.

What is your plan for the future after you finish your course and become qualified plumber?

I would like to set up my own business and be self-employed, specialising in house renovating work and general maintenance. It is just a case of increasing my confidence and being happy with the things I am doing…then I will take it from there and see how it goes.
