Craig Towell

Craig Towell is training to become an electrician.

Trades World spoke to Craig to find out more about his life, changes, and future ambitions in the trades.

What did motivate you to pursue a career in the trades?

It was mainly because of dissatisfaction from my current career…being an electrician is something I have always wanted to do.

Tell us about your employment history up to date?

I am skill working in geophysical investigations in the construction industry. We conduct geophysical surveys on bridges, buildings and roads.

Do you find some of the skills useful in your electrical training?

Yes, some of the things we do in my current job are closely related to the electrical industry, so I have some knowledge about the tools and the electrical industry as a whole. Knowing how to strip cables and being able to use different tools is definitely helping me in the training.

What things have you being doing in your electrical training?

We started with an induction of the electrical trades; after that we went through some health and safety assessments, including manual handling and putting up a ladder properly… we are now doing safe isolation of cables and installing lighting circuits.

What qualities does someone need to have in order to be a good electrician?

I think the most important thing for people in the electrical trades would be an eye for detail. It is so easy to look at something that you have wired up and not see a mistake you have made, because you have been thinking about it too much. It is important to look back at the work you have done and identify any potential mistakes you may have made…I find it essential to have that eye for details and be able take a step back and reflect on the job you have done.

What is the most enjoyable part of the course for you?

I really enjoy the hands-on work, using the skills and the knowledge I have developed though the training as well as my previous career. I think that doing the actual practical work is the most satisfying part of the course.

What do you think about the tutors in centre?

They are really knowledgeable and very easy to approach individuals; tutors are always happy to answer any questions you may have; they are floating around… and before you even have thought of a question in your head, the tutors are standing beside you…ready to give you some pointers and help with everything; they are excellent.

What is your plan after you finish your course and become a fully qualified electrician?

I am planning to work for a company or be the electrician’s mate for a couple of years… just to gain more experience and increase my confidence. There are some tricks of the trades that will come only by experience and I hope to master those skills in the future. Then the ultimate goal is to become self-employed and run my own successful business.
