George Archer Palmer

George Archer Palmer is training to become an electrician.

Trades World spoke to George to find out more about his life, changes, and future ambitions in the trades.

What did motivate you to pursue a career in the trades?

After 20-year career in the financial markets in London I was made redundant and decided to have a career change. I started my painting and decorating business in 2000 and since then I have been working in that area. But I am finding that the work opportunities in that sector are not as great as I would like them to be and that is how I decided to pursue an electrical career. I have always been interested in it and the trades will boost my future career prospects.

How are you finding the transition from the financial sector into the trades?

It is a huge change and I find it very interesting. The learning process is stimulating and the tutors are very helpful too.

Do you find the job’s satisfaction element more rewarding in the trades?

The pressure is different…I was employed before whereas now I am self-employed; I can make my own decisions and drive the business forward. I hope to carry that with the electrical trade as well.

Why did you choose to study electrics?

The thing that appealed to me about electrics was its working environment. Electrics are much cleaner than plumbing and decorating. These were some of the main reasons to pursue that career. Also, my financial background easily allows me to gain new knowledge of the trades. The course is very explanatory and it gives you all the information you need. As long as you follow the things that are set up in the course, it is easy to take things on board.

How are you finding the tutors on the course?

I did my first part of the course in Southampton. The tutors there were equally helpful as in Wolverhampton, where I am at the moment.  They are very knowledgeable and approachable. Tutors are highly proactive and positive in getting the information to the students. They are happy to answer any questions the students might have and explain anything that they might not have fully understood.

What things have you being doing in your electrical training?

We have been studying about inspection and testing, health and safety legislation as well as different rules and regulations from the trades.

What is your most enjoyable part of the course?

I look at the overall package of the course and enjoy everything in it.

What qualities does someone need to have in order to be a good electrician?

You need to be personable and very knowledgeable. You also have to be very reliable and trustworthy.

What advice would you give to people considering a career in the trades?

Look at it as great opportunity. The applications of electrics can open so many doors in the future. The qualifications that I will get will allow me to have much better employment prospects in the future.

What is your plan after you finish your course and become fully qualified electrician?

When I fully qualify I don’t think I will go out, starting on my own business…it will be better for me to get some experience for a year or two, working for another employer. This will help me to gain more confidence and I think that applies to any profession. I think the important thing is to be flexible and always be open to new opportunities in the future.
