Sam Collins
Sam Collins is training to become an electrician.
Trades World spoke to Sam to find out more about his life, changes, and future ambitions in the trades.
What did motivate you to pursue a career in the trades?
I have always enjoyed electrics. Ever since GCSC school grades I have an “A” star in electronics…but I have worked in care for 5 years and I think I need a career change.
What things have you being doing in your electrical training?
We have been studying about inspection and testing, health and safety legislation as well as different rules and regulations from the trades.
What is your most enjoyable part of the course?
I think the favourite part would be about the testing and inspecting…because it’s all new to me. I am good with my hands and enjoy the practical training, but I also find it easy with the theoretical knowledge of the course as well.
What qualities does someone need to have in order to be a good electrician?
They need to have attention to details, always take their time and be confident in what they are doing. It is useful to have basic knowledge of mathematics and know how to use the tools.
What is your employment history and do you find some of your skills from previous profession useful in the trades?
I have done some electrical work before. I did an electrical apprenticeship with Scottish Power, so I have an extensive knowledge of the electrical trade anyway…but my other jobs have been housekeeping, removals and I am a fully qualified care practitioner.
What is your plan after you finish your course and become fully qualified plumber?
I am hoping to get into employment very soon…I am going to be applying for jobs in the next few weeks, may be start working for someone else, so I could gain more experience and then set up my own business one day.
Is there any specific electrical field in which you would like to specialise when you set up your own company?
It is quite rural where I live, so I would probably remain as a self-employed domestic installer.
What advice would you give to people considering a career in the trades?
I would say that it is really good job to have. Obviously, there will be always high demand for electricians and it is well-paid job.
