Sean Prentice
Sean Prentice is training to become a plumber.
Trades World spoke to Sean to find out more about his life, changes, and future ambitions in the trades.
What did motivate you to pursue a career in the trades?
I wasn’t enjoying my career in the motor trades and I couldn’t see any bright future in it, so I decided to pursue a new plumbing career because I want to be successful.
What sector of the motor trade did you work before?
I was working in mechanics and parts.
Do you find some of your skills from your previous profession useful in the trades?
Yes, the mechanics is helpful in the plumbing industry, but it is a completely new experience for me and I am really enjoying it.
What qualities does someone need to have in order to be a good plumber?
People definitely need to have self-confidence and work consistently throughout their training. There is nothing difficult in the plumbing trades.
Do you have any tips how people can boost their confidence?
It’s always challenging at the beginning, but if people manage to secure employment that would certainly help them to increase their knowledge and confidence.
How long have you been training now?
I have been training for three and a half years now.
What is the part of the course that you most enjoy?
The practical training is great and I really enjoy it. When I complete a job and it’s finished to an excellent standard, I feel so satisfied.
What are the things you have been doing in centre?
Because I am on my last two weeks of the course, I have covered everything…we have done steel pipe work, copper pipe work, cylinders, radiators, installation of a bathroom etc.
How did you find the balance between the practical and the theoretical part of the course?
You have to mix it up and know what you are doing…you need to know the theory part of the job as well as have the practical knowledge when you go on site. So, the balance is really good because we do couple of days in the workshop and then back to the classroom for some time. In this way the course is really well structured.
What do you think about the tutors in centre?
The tutors in centre are fantastic. I am currently in Wolverhampton and this centre is excellent.
What is your plan after you finish your course and become fully qualified plumber?
My plan is to continue to work for the plumbing company I am currently employed and at the same time progress with the gas side of things and keep growing my portfolio of skills…I am even thinking of specialising in the solar and gas industry.
What advice would you give to those considering a career in the trades?
I would advise people to always follow their dreams…if the plumbing trade is their inspiration, they I would tell them just to go for it.
